Getting Around, Reno Travel, Transport and Car Rental

Reno is a fairly remote city, but boasts very good transport and travel services, meaning that visitors will still be fresh and ready for the casinos when they arrive. There is a first-class international airport within the city limits, offering a number of easy transport options, which regularly travel to and from downtown Reno.
Good Greyhound bus and Amtrak train services arrive in Reno from important surrounding cities based within the neighboring states of Arizona,
California, Idaho,
Oregon and
Utah, while the city also boasts the major I-80 Interstate (Lincoln Highway), which runs right through its very center (east to west).
Reno-Tahoe International Airport (RNO) / Arriving by Air
Located a few miles to the southeast of downtown, the
Reno-Tahoe International Airport is a very convenient facility in Nevada. The airport receives direct flights from many major US cities, as well as from overseas destinations. You can fly here from the likes of
Chicago,
Dallas,
Denver,
Los Angeles and
San Francisco. Highway US-395 and local buses travel to downtown Reno, while a handy casino shuttle service offers transport to the major casinos every 30 minutes.

Car Rental
The Reno-Tahoe International Airport has transport agencies for all of the major car hire firms and the city's streets are very easy to navigate by car. The Interstate I-80 runs all the way from San Francisco on the west coast to
New York City on the eastern seaboard, via Reno. Those traveling from Los Angeles should take the I-5 Interstate to
Sacramento and the I-80 Interstate east of the city. Snow chains may be required in adverse winter weather conditions.
Buses and Coaches
If you are on a budget or would prefer to save your pennies for the roulette tables, then traveling by Greyhound bus is the cheapest transport option for getting to Reno. Buses travel to and from San Francisco,
Las Vegas and
Salt Lake City. Those coming from the west go via Sacramento. Within Reno, the RTC's (Regional Transportation Commission) Citifare bus system covers most of the city with daytime running hours.
Trains
Amtrak trains arrive daily from the west and east, with the California Zephyr train running from Chicago in 43 hours, Denver in 26 hours, and Salt Lake City in 10 hours. Traveling to and from Reno by train is more expensive than US bus transport, although you do get more in the way of comfort.
Taxis
You can cover Reno's finer points fairly easily on foot, but if you don't want to hire a car and prefer the added convenience of fast travel, there are a number of reputable taxi firms to take you where you want to go. These include Star Taxi Service, Whittlesea Checker Taxis and Reno Sparks Cabs. Many top hotels and casinos in the downtown district also provide free courtesy vans throughout the day, and so this may well be worth bearing in mind.
